Over the period from 1972 into the mid-1980s, the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF), known at the “Luftforsvaret” (air defense),  issued a version of the Heuer Reference 1550 SG chronograph to it pilots and other personnel.  These chronographs were originally placed into service during the period from 1972 to 1978, with the watches being re-issued into the mid-1980s, at which time they were retired from service.

These watches were identical to the chronographs issued by the German armed forces, the “Bundeswehr”, with the following exceptions:

  • the case-backs of the chronographs issued by the Norwegian Air Force are engraved with “LUFTFORSVARET” on the first line and the serial number and the year of first issuance on the second line.
  • Heuer’s reference for the “Bund” chronographs (1550 SG) is engraved between the lugs at 6 o’clock and the serial number matching the number engraved on the case-back is engraved between the lugs at 12 o’clock.
  • The German “Bundeswehr” chronographs were issued with numerous variations in the style of the dials, while the Luftforsvaret chronograph was issued with only one style dial.  The dial used for the Luftforsvaret “Bund” is sometimes referred to as the “T-only” dial, as it has a small “T” for “Tritium”, printed above the 6 at the bottom of the dial.

Fratello has published a comprehensive posting covering the history of the “Luftforsvaret” chronographs issued by Norwegian Air Force — The Norwegian Heuer 1550 SG “Luftforsvaret”: An In-Depth History Of A Fascinating Military Model, and the information above has been taken from that posting.
